By the end of summer 2022, guests dropping by Ontario Power Generation’s Saunders Hydro Dam Visitor Centre in Cornwall will soon enjoy serene views thanks to an Indigenous-inspired project at the site.

This project, being constructed by the Iroquois-Sullivan joint venture will feature a new trail, diverse gardens with plants and flora important to Indigenous people, an overlook shelter, and a medicinal herb garden with a drying shed on the grounds around the visitor centre.

The Calabogie Generating Station Redevelopment Project hosted Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski, (pictured here with Sullivan project Manager Melissa Good) who was recently invited to tour the site, says this project is something people at the provincial level are proud of.

“One of our focuses is expanding and maximizing the production of clean, green power here in Ontario on the mighty Madawaska that was 100 years old,” he said. “We’re now replacing it with something that is technologically modern. In visiting this site today, I’m seeing something that is quite remarkable, more than I had expected.”

The new generating station is expected to have a service life of 90 to 100 years.

OPG is the largest electricity generator in the province, providing almost half of the power Ontarians rely on every day. They have been operating in eastern Ontario for more than 100 years. Today, they have one thermal facility and 10 hydroelectric generating stations on the St. Lawrence, Ottawa, and Madawaska Rivers.

The SNC Lavalin & Sullivan joint-venture Calabogie Generating Station Redevelopment was featured on the cover and inside the Ontario Water Power Association 2021 Year in Review Publication.

When it goes into service in 2022, the new two-unit hydroelectric station will provide approximately 11 megawatts of power for the province by efficiently using the water currently available on the Madawaska River. That’s enough electricity to power about 10,000 homes.

The original, century-old Calabogie GS powerhouse is being replaced with a new, higher-capacity powerhouse positioned about 50 metres upstream.

In the Summer of 2022, the largest single concrete pour of approximately 760 cubic metres was completed during a non-stop 13-hour period to construct the lower half draft tube sections for both generating units. An additional estimated 742 cubic metres of concrete was poured to complete the upper half of the draft tube sections.

OPG is investing more than $100 million to redevelop the Calabogie site, and about 175 person-years of work will be associated with the construction, boosting employment and economic benefits in the region.

Sullivan’s Junior Health, Safety and Environment Assistant Carly Lance is featured for her role on the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Calabogie Redevelopment Project. This project is boosting employment and economic benefits in the region, including hiring of local Indigenous community members like Carly.

The Calabogie redevelopment will see a new hydro generating facility replace the original, century-old powerhouse on the Madawaska River. When it goes into service in 2022, the new two-unit station will double the output of clean hydro power at the site from five to approximately 11 megawatts by making better use of the existing water available.

Iroquois Consulting and M. Sullivan and Son collaborated on the completion of a butterfly and herb garden, and announced the unveiling that they are forming a joint venture, Iroquois-Sullivan.

The garden, which sits in front of the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Saunders Hydro Dam Visitors’ Centre, was designed to help improve biodiversity in the area by attracting pollinating insects and birds, while also paying homage to plants that hold significance in traditional Mohawk culture, and educating visitors on the uses and history of the traditional herbs planted there.

To find out what plant species were used in the garden and more on the 51% Indigenous owned Iroquois-Sullivan joint venture read the full article here.
