The Guardrail Upgrades project at the North Bay Regional Health Centre was recently completed by the team at our Sullivan North office.

This project was completed during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic and took a considerable amount of pre-planning and coordination inside the operational hospital.

Infection control was considered a distinct project within the primary guardrail project itself as safety was always the primary concern in addition to the work.

Specially designed Frit Glass Panels and Metal Panels were installed throughout the hospital to form a long mural that illustrates the 4 seasons. Additional curtainwall was also installed.

As the previous layout of the hospital was an open concept from the basement to the third-floor level above this new installation is a much safer design that is also aesthetically beautiful.

The Calabogie Generating Station Redevelopment Project hosted Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski, (pictured here with Sullivan project Manager Melissa Good) who was recently invited to tour the site, says this project is something people at the provincial level are proud of.

“One of our focuses is expanding and maximizing the production of clean, green power here in Ontario on the mighty Madawaska that was 100 years old,” he said. “We’re now replacing it with something that is technologically modern. In visiting this site today, I’m seeing something that is quite remarkable, more than I had expected.”

The new generating station is expected to have a service life of 90 to 100 years.

OPG is the largest electricity generator in the province, providing almost half of the power Ontarians rely on every day. They have been operating in eastern Ontario for more than 100 years. Today, they have one thermal facility and 10 hydroelectric generating stations on the St. Lawrence, Ottawa, and Madawaska Rivers.

The #cnlnewbuilds project is featured in the Ottawa Construction Association April 2022 edition of #OCA Construction Comment Magazine.

The suite of 3 incredible mass timber buildings being completed by the Sullivan-Chandos Joint Venture and Integrated Project Delivery Team recently achieved the Mass Timber Complete Milestone AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!

The construction wood was grown, harvested, designed, and manufactured in Canada and is used as the main structural material. In constructing the new buildings, CNL received $4.33 million in financial support from Green Construction through Wood (GCWood), a program administered by Natural Resources Canada to increase the use of wood in infrastructure projects as a sustainable construction material.

Environmentally conscious construction is important to us as our families live in the local communities we work in. We want to do all we can to preserve the environment for future generations as we help to create the revitalized campus at CNL.

On a beautiful, sunny day in March, the Sullivan team was able to take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Carleton University (Official) Student Residence Project. Dignitaries such as the university’s President, both Vice Presidents, the Director of Student Housing, and Architects Diamond Schmitt and KWC Architects were all in attendance.

This state-of-the-art facility will be home to 450 students and showcase an amenity floor that includes study, social, fitness, and cooking spaces for the entire residence community. This building uses the fundamentals of passive house design and will serve as a beacon as community members come onto campus.

#shoutout to  Sullivan field staff for the great job they did in ensuring the site was ready for the groundbreaking event. Completion is scheduled for the summer of 2024. Photo credit to Carleton University.

Sullivan, in partnership with Architects DCA, is working with the Department of National Defense (DND) and Defense Construction Canada (DCC) on a 150,000-square-foot facility to support the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Expeditionary Capability with a new infrastructure for 2 Air Expeditionary Wing in Bagotville, Quebec.

In January of 2020, M. Sullivan & Son Limited (Sullivan) published our five-year business plan that aligned our operations with our strategic goals and vision. Over the last two years, we have exceeded these goals, adapted through COVID-19, and entered a phase of rapid growth that has taken us to levels unseen in our 108 years of business. Throughout these changes, one thing has remained, which is our employee’s dedication to the success of Sullivan and our unwavering commitment to our corporate values.

With this growth in numbers and people, we wanted to revisit our corporate values to ensure they continue to reflect who we are today. We did not want to re-write the values per se – as they have always been a solid foundation – but we felt it was time to build on them as we prepare to enter the next phase of Sullivan.

All members of Sullivan’s Strategic Planning Group (SPG) have provided input on what unique values tie us together. That input, combined with our strong history and promising future, led us to adopt six core values that are better aligned with our people. We will be promoting our new core values across the organization so stay tuned! I am pleased to share them with you.

The SNC Lavalin & Sullivan joint-venture Calabogie Generating Station Redevelopment was featured on the cover and inside the Ontario Water Power Association 2021 Year in Review Publication.

When it goes into service in 2022, the new two-unit hydroelectric station will provide approximately 11 megawatts of power for the province by efficiently using the water currently available on the Madawaska River. That’s enough electricity to power about 10,000 homes.

The original, century-old Calabogie GS powerhouse is being replaced with a new, higher-capacity powerhouse positioned about 50 metres upstream.

In the Summer of 2022, the largest single concrete pour of approximately 760 cubic metres was completed during a non-stop 13-hour period to construct the lower half draft tube sections for both generating units. An additional estimated 742 cubic metres of concrete was poured to complete the upper half of the draft tube sections.

OPG is investing more than $100 million to redevelop the Calabogie site, and about 175 person-years of work will be associated with the construction, boosting employment and economic benefits in the region.
